A little bit of history of handkerchief:
Catullus (87-57 BC) mentions handkerchiefs in his poems quite often, but he gives no information on how often they were used nor any history prior to his era. Throughout history, they have absorbed perspiration, veiled faces, and covered the mouth for protection from bad weather and infectious diseases. In the first century Before Christ, they were mainly used by members of the ruling and social classes as a true luxury. Linen was the preferred fabric, since it was quite expensive and available only to the well-to-do. As flax became more readily available through the import trade, and because the middle class wanted these accessories, they became more widely used after the birth of Christ.
